Virginia Stage Company is Southeastern Virginia’s leading theater destination, serving an audience of over 70,000 annually, both at the Wells Theatre and throughout the community.

Virginia Stage Company’s mission is to “enrich, educate and entertain the region by creating and producing theatrical art of the highest quality.”

Virginia Stage Company exists as a home for professional theater in Downtown Norfolk and has earned a reputation as one of the country’s foremost regional theaters.

Virginia Stage Company attracts the nation’s leading artists to the Wells stage for an annual artistic mix of stage classics, contemporary entertainment, and innovative new works.

Shows receiving their world premieres at Virginia Stage Company regularly include stories of special regional interest that we commission through our American Soil New Plays Program and musicals on their path to the Great White Way that we present in partnership with Broadway producers.

Virginia Stage Company productions are created on site and from the ground up  costumes to sets, sound to lighting  especially for our unique Hampton Roads audience.

Virginia Stage Company strives to celebrate our community’s rich diversity and reaches out to the broadest possible constituency for all our work.

Our ongoing agenda at Virginia Stage Company includes brainstorming new ways for people to experience theater as both our society and our artform evolve.

New events this year, including our popular Virginia Stage Company Uncorked and Director’s Salons, have already brought thousands of new patrons to the Wells.

Virginia Stage Company reaches 30,000 students each year through its complex mix of educational programing. Unique initiatives like this season’s Shakespeare Out of the Canon give students new ways to look at language, literature, and themselves.

Our X-Out Bullying Workshop is now in its third important season, empowering students daily at hundreds of elementary schools from North Carolina to Northern Virginia.

Virginia Stage Company is owned by our community and relies heavily on the generosity of individuals, corporations, municipalities and charitable foundations in reaching its mission.

For their support and for the invested enthusiasm of our community, we are deeply grateful.
