MISSION
Simplicity of compelling stories told by talented storytellers
Created by Tampa Bay actors, A Simple Theatre in Residence at Eckerd College is a 501(c)3 non-profit professional company founded on the belief that great theatre is rooted in the simplicity of compelling stories told by talented storytellers. Focusing on excellent acting, intelligent direction, elegant design, and brilliant playwriting, our productions will challenge, provoke, and emotionally engage our audience.
VISION
A theatre company that would complement - not compete with - the existing professional theatre companies
In 2011 Gavin Hawk and Meg Heimstead, active and accomplished local actors, came to believe that there was a need for a theatre company that would complement - not compete with - the existing professional theatre companies. That what was missing was a professional group creating theatre that was affordable and accessible; that attracted audiences new to live theatre; and that would partner with other arts and cultural institutions to extend reach and keep down costs.
To meet these needs, A Simple Theatre was born. It is dedicated (as the name implies) to performing for audiences enthusiastic about the basic concepts of live theatre: beautifully written words that meaningfully address universal issues spoken by highly trained artists in a simple, intimate setting. With staged readings, strategic partnerships and dedicated volunteers and supporters, A Simple Theatre has been able to provide theatre-goers with a uniquely intimate experience at a reasonable price.
HISTORY
A Simple Theatre (AST) was incorporated and granted its charitable exemption as a 501(c)3 organization on March 4, 2011. In April 2013, AST entered into an agreement with Eckerd College and became formally known as "A Simple Theatre in Residence at Eckerd College." This partnership enables AST to produce and perform in a permanent home with proper lighting and sound equipment, and free parking for theatre patrons.
