Mission:

Ballet Chelsea builds strong individuals through high caliber training and performance excellence while giving back to the audience that supports them through arts education and community outreach.

About Us:

Ballet Chelsea began in 1995 as Youth Dance Theatre of Michigan, and was formed to provide supplemental dance instruction and performance opportunities to young dancers attending Dance Arts of Chelsea dance studios. This year we changed our name to Ballet Chelsea, to better reflect our educational focus, to clarify our mission and message, and to display our pride in being part of the Chelsea-area’s rich arts community. Today, Ballet Chelsea membership includes nearly 70 male and female dancers from Ann Arbor, Chelsea, Dexter, Grass Lake, Jackson, Manchester, Marshall, Pinckney, Stockbridge and Ypsilanti. Ballet Chelsea is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization. Ballet Chelsea (formerly YDT) has been given tax exempt status by the IRS, and can accept contributions. All contributions are fully tax deductible to the amount allowed by law. Ballet Chelsea provides company members an opportunity to perform in two full-length ballets each season. In December, we present our annual holiday rendition of The Nutcracker, with full narration of the classic story. In the spring, Ballet Chelsea presents a production with original choreography by our Artistic Director, Wendi DuBois. For a list of our past performances visit the Events page. In addition to performance opportunities, Ballet Chelsea offers educational experiences, such as guest artist master classes, and outreach activities.

Ballet Chelsea continues to offer a Summer Dance Intensive camp spanning four levels of experience. Disciplines offered include ballet technique, pointe, partnering, variations, jazz and modern. Seminar topics vary each year, including such topics as nutrition, exercise physiology, stress management, and injury prevention.
