Mission Statement :
Brave New World Repertory Theatre is a company of Brooklyn-based theatre professionals dedicated to creating dynamic productions of classic plays, as well as new works by Brooklyn writers. The company performs in unique and historic Brooklyn venues, reaching out to under-served audiences to promote a love of theatre.
History:
Brave New World Repertory Theatre was founded in 2003 by Claire Beckman, Amy Ilias and John Morgan (pictured); for the past ten years the company has performed classic works and new works by Brooklyn writers in unique and historic Brooklyn venues.
The Company consists of 35 core members, all Brooklyn residents, and has recently focused on works by Pulitzer-Prize winners Lynn Nottage and David Lindsay-Abaire, Tony-Award winner Greg Kotis, Charles Mee, and others.
Major large-scale works by the company include To Kill a Mockingbird, performed across six Ditmas Park porches, The Tempest on the Coney Island Boardwalk and beach, and Street Scene inside and on the adjacent stoop and sidewalk of a tenement in Park Slope. All of these performances were free to the public.
For three seasons the company was commissioned to present work at Celebrate Brooklyn, and in 2013 participated in the BEAT Festival. In 2010 BNW produced a lantern-lit, site-specific production of The Crucible at the Old Stone House, and The Halloween Plays, three original one acts by Brooklyn writers at Company XIV.
BNW has a long history of presenting staged readings; in 2013 the company formalized its commitment to developing work by Brooklyn writers by creating New Works. The new initiative is designed to give artists a chance to explore a new work with substantial rehearsal time and resources dedicated toward producing a staged reading. Writers this year include Erin Courtney, Kristoffer Diaz, Mark Sitko and Gary Winter.
