Built in 1945 in the 'Art deco' style, the Island Roxy Theatre features Misty's hoof prints set in the concrete sidewalk in front of the box office. It is a large single screen theatre with 352 seats. The original fabric n the wills joins the impressive interior with the original green and pink terrazzo in the lobby. The ceiling is painted in deco motif of 'trailing ivy.' It Was the first building on the Eastern Shore to have central air conditioning.
The theatre has become a landmark in Chincoteague, and many memories have been created here through the magic of the silver screen. It has become a tradition for many that visit yearly and a weekly stop for many who live nearby. At the opening of the movie "Misty" and on other occasions in the 1950's, Misty walked the isles before the showing of "her" movie. Occasionally the theatre is used for live performances. The Chincoteague Island film club has monthly showings in its series of acclaimed films.
