Mission

The Purpose of the Kirkwood Theatre Guild is to present theatrical productions for the enjoyment of its members and the community and to stimulate interest in the dramatic arts.

History

The Kirkwood Theatre Guild owes it success to a small group of dedicated individuals who were committed to a dream of having a thriving local community theatre in the St. Louis area.  In 1931, they produced their first play, an English comedy, Tillie of Bloomsbury. Getting established proved to have many challenges, especially financial difficulties. The early participants were talented folk who performed, built sets, raised funds, and recruited their friends to come see their shows. KTG was fortunate to have leadership with a vision, and the group persevered and grew each year.

From 1931 to 1963 the Guild rented for its productions the hall at 310 East Argonne Drive.  The original landlord was the Solari Guild, a local school for the arts, but later it was purchased by the American Legion. After outgrowing the space, KTG performed at Kirkwood High School and North Middle School.  In 1968 the Guild was thrilled to call the new Robert G. Reim Theatre at the Kirkwood Community Center their new home. The Kirkwood Theatre Guild is one of the oldest, most established community theatre groups in the Midwest and one of the organizations with the longest record of continuously producing plays.

During its 79 years more than 292 shows have been produced.  Thousands of gallons of paint have been used; hundred of lights have been positioned; many, many envelopes have been stuffed, and hundreds of costumes have been stitched, laundered and ironed.  Thousands of volunteers have donated their gifts of time and talent in order to give our audiences the best of live entertainment.
