Mission Statement:

San Diego Musical Theatre (SDMT) is an award-winning, nonprofit theater company that seeks to bring vibrant musical theatre to the San Diego community. The mission of SDMT is to impact audiences by producing a range of classic and contemporary musical productions that engage and enhance the overall experience. By partnering with professional actors, musicians, and technicians SDMT infuses momentum and energy into one of the only true American art forms. SDMT’s vision is to create an environment where high-quality musical theatre thrives in San Diego for generations to come.

History:

San Diego Musical Theatre (SDMT) was founded by Gary and Erin Lewis on September 26, 2006, as a professional, non-profit, musical theatre organization that produces Broadway musicals.

About SDMTGary and Erin grew up in San Diego where both of their families enjoyed attending local productions. When their daughter began performing at local theatres, over 20 years ago, they soon discovered that they wanted to become more involved in the San Diego theatrical community and volunteered their services, time and resources.

While owning and operating a successful business together, in San Diego, for over 35 years Gary and Erin decided the time was right to add an exciting new adventure to their life … and San Diego Musical Theatre was born!

The San Diego Regional Premiere of The Full Monty, performed at the North Park Theatre, was the inaugural production for SDMT. The Full Monty was an audience and critical success winning the Outstanding Musical Direction award!

SDMT’s first full season began at the East County Performing Arts Center with productions of Guys and Dolls and Bye Bye Birdie. Both shows were met with enthusiastic audiences and great reviews. Dreamgirls, the final show of the season, was produced at the Lyceum Theatre and won San Diego’s awards for Outstanding Musical Production and for Best Male Actor!

The second season of musicals, all at the Lyceum Theatre, began with Smokey Joe’s Café rocking the stage, followed by the San Diego Premiere of The Story Of My Life and ended with the phenomenal A Chorus Line that played to sold out houses – what a thrill!

San Diego Musical Theatre is proud of their Boys and Girls Clubs outreach program. The boys and girls from our local military bases are invited to attend a special performance of each of our productions. The arts are very important to the development of our children and this is one way that SDMT can help make a difference.

San Diego Musical Theatre’s goal is to continue to offer San Diego audiences musical theatre of the highest caliber. SDMT is committed to presenting, preserving, producing and promoting, with passion, musical theatre that ignites the human spirit.
